In Loving Memory of Gilberto Williams June 29, 1952 – August 15, 2025 Celebration of Life Saturday, August 30, 2025, Ivy Hill Cemetery
A Life Remembered Gilberto Williams was born on June 29, 1952, the eldest of seven siblings to the late William and Parthenia Southern, who raised and shaped him into the man so many loved and respected. From his mother, Parthenia, Gilbert learned to be sharp on his feet and quick- thinking. From his father, William, he learned by example what it meant to be a man, a provider, and to always put family above all else. A proud graduate of John F. Bartram High School, Gilbert served in the United States Army, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant before receiving an honorable discharge. He built an extraordinary 48-year career at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, where he entered the welding apprenticeship program and quickly rose to recognition for his unmatched craftsmanship. Welding wasn't just a job for Gilbert—it was a passion, and in every spark and seam, he left his mark. At the heart of Gilbert's journey was his life partner, Margaret Williams, his childhood sweetheart and wife of 51 years. Married young, they grew up together and weathered every season side by side. As a father, Gilbert instilled pride, purpose, and perseverance in his children, and his love for his grandchildren was unconditional and limitless. Gilbert was more than a brother—he was a friend. As one of the eldest of his siblings, he wore that role with pride. He celebrated victories, stood by them in struggles, and reminded them that family was everything. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; children Oba, Sheniece, and Naeem; son-in-law Eric; grandchildren Tyriq, Malik, Shakor, Ashley, Jameel, Jileel, Khori', Mujahid, Keyira, Afini, Kidadah; granddaughter-in-law Naasiah; ten great-grandchildren; brothers Jerome and Anthony; sisters Katherine and Joann; brothers-in-law Colin and Michael; sisters-in-law Nyeda and Vanessa; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Parthenia, sister Wanda, brothers Dennis and Billy, sister-in-law Pamela, and grandson Shakoor.
