IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Helena
Maddox
May 8, 1959 – June 18, 2025
Obituary for Helena Maddox Helena Maddox, affectionately known as "Lena" or "Butter," transitioned on June 18, 2025, at the age of 66. A proud Philadelphian, Lena was known for her big heart, quick wit, and unwavering love for those closest to her. Born on May 8, 1959, to Julia Maddox and Walter Donald Maddox, Lena grew up in Philadelphia and attended Robert Morris Elementary (K–5), Logan for 6th grade, Cook Middle School (7–9), and graduated from Olney High School. Her early years shaped her into the strong, creative, and fiercely independent woman many came to know and love. Lena's life was full of warmth, honesty, and humor. She raised her beloved son, Joshua Maddox-Crum, with deep devotion and pride. She also played a special role in the lives of many in her family—especially her niece, Gabrielle Ellerbe, who was like a daughter to her in every way, and her grandniece, Nia Spencer, who brought her joy and was deeply cherished. Known for her love of decorating and design, Lena found joy in transforming spaces and making them feel like home. She had a green thumb and took great pride in her garden. Shopping trips, casino visits, puzzles, movies, and bowling were among her favorite pastimes. A natural storyteller, Lena was hilarious, loving, and delightfully blunt—she said what she meant, and she meant what she said. She was deeply giving, genuinely caring, and always thinking of others. Lena is survived by her son, Joshua Maddox-Crum; her grandniece, Nia Spencer; her siblings, Lillian Arrington and Walter Donald Maddox, Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will carry her memory with them always. She was preceded in death by her mother, Julia Maddox; her father, Walter Donald Maddox; her sister, Lisa Renee Maddox; her brother, Kevin James Maddox, and her niece Gabrielle Ellerbe. Lena will be deeply missed—and we will be loving her, always.
