Obituary

Dr. Herbert Linwood Coverdale, a distinguished scholar, Qigong master, and devoted father, passed away on April 26, 2025. Born on October 9, 1940, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Leola Buffalo and Herbert Linwood Coverdale, Sr., Herb lived a life defined by insatiable curiosity, creative brilliance, and an unwavering passion for learning.

A proud graduate of Central High School in Philadelphia, Herb began an extraordinary academic journey that reflected his deep intellectual gifts and lifelong commitment to discovery. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Penn State University, a Master of Science in Psychology from Howard University, and, in 1970, completed his formal education with a Ph.D. in Psychophysiology from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Herb's scholarly pursuits extended far beyond the classroom; he immersed himself in philosophy, the arts, and healing traditions from around the world, seeking a holistic understanding of the human experience.

Throughout his career, he held esteemed faculty positions at San Diego State University, California State University, Monterey Bay, and the University of California, Berkeley. Outside academia, Herb demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit by founding two marketing research firms. His academic work was profoundly interdisciplinary, blending Western science with Traditional Chinese Medicine and mind-body practices. Herb was also a visionary in community wellness—developing an innovative program for incarcerated youth that combined Qigong and creative writing, and teaching Qigong to seniors and children alike, sharing ancient healing arts across generations.

He was a proud member of several organizations, including the American Psychological Association, the Qigong Association of America, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated—where his values of excellence, leadership, and service found a lasting home.

Despite his intellectual depth, Herb found his greatest joy in life's soulful, everyday moments: listening to the timeless melodies of Miles Davis, inventing whimsical contraptions to uplift the human spirit, watching classic films, and savoring seafood at his favorite local spots. A passionate lover of jazz, rhythm, and blues, he opened a record store in Hyde Park called Happiness Is—a fitting reflection of his love for music and the joy he sought to bring others. In 2005, he published The Power of Simplicity, writing, "The most enriching and rewarding journey to be taken in life is the one taken with oneself—that leads to insight, enlightenment, and wisdom."

Herb was married twice. His first marriage to Cornelia Coverdale brought him two cherished daughters, Valerie Lin Coverdale and Christina Gibson (Coverdale) Watlington. Together Cornelia and Herb formed a loving blended family with Gregory, Eric, and Geoffrey Miller. His second marriage to Carla Coverdale was blessed with a son, Miles Victor Coverdale.

He is lovingly remembered by his children and four grandchildren—Ngozi, Nyome, Sadiki, and Riley—who brought immense joy to his later years, along with his son-in-law, Malik, and his daughter-in-law, Claudette.

Herb's legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched—through his scholarship, his spiritual insight, and, above all, his joyful, creative, and compassionate spirit. He will be remembered for his infectious laughter, eccentric charm, and unconventional spirit. He lit up every room he entered. He inspired those around him to live authentically, think expansively, and celebrate their uniqueness. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

A private memorial service will be held by invitation only.
