Life Story of Julianne James
After a brief illness, Julianne James passed on Monday, November 10th ,
2025. She was born on February 23rd to Sylvania Artis Harmon and Borden Harmon in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She has two sisters, Pamela Harmon Sykes and Kathryn Harmon Butler. Julianne was educated in the Philadelphia School System. She graduated from West Philadelphia High School. She and her sisters were lovingly called the "Harmon Girls or Harmonettes." During High School she met her sweetheart, Alexander James, who she later married. Two children, Alexander James, Jr. and Jill R. James were born of their union. Once her children were both in full time elementary school, Julianne began to further her education. Julianne's impressive academic foundation began with an Associate of Science in Mental Health from the Community College of Philadelphia. She continued her studies, earning a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Rosemont College, followed by a Master of Arts in Social Gerontology from the University of Pennsylvania. Her passion for psychology led her to the University of Delaware, where she completed a year of coursework toward a PhD in Psychology. Later, Julianne furthered her expertise by becoming a Certified Qualified Tax Collector through PATH, Harrisburg, PA. Julianne's life motto was "Activity is Happiness." In keeping with that, she served tirelessly on community committees, executive boards, associations, and conferences. Julianne assisted with volunteer recruitment for numerous events including the first Breaking The Silence Program created by Senator Vincent Hughes. Julianne was selected to be a DC Delegate for the White House Conference on Aging. The following year, she served as the Mini Conference Coordinator for the White House Conference on Aging in Philadelphia. She advocated for the inclusion of an Aging focus with the National Association of Black Social Workers. As a long standing member of the National Association of Black Social Workers, she was co-chair of the
African American Elders Council. Locally in Philadelphia, Julianne served as Vice-President for two terms and ultimately rising to the office of President for the Philadelphia Chapter for six years. Julianne served as the first Chairperson for the Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly- Philadelphia. After the Philadelphia location was established, she continued as an Advisory Committee Member. Julianne has served as a trainer for the State of Pennsylvania and a board member for the Center for Ethnic and Minority Aging. Her leadership in these organizations demonstrates her dedication to advocacy, mentorship, and uplifting underserved populations.
Julianne is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated- Philadelphia Alumnae Chapter. She has served as Assistant Chaplain and
on various committees. She served as bus hostess for the Delta Sigma Theta 2025 National Convention. Julianne loved the sisterhood and service to all as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Julianne directed a senior center for the Mental Health Consortium for 20+ years. She served as Executive Director for the Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly in Philadelphia for 5 years. After years of working in community organizations, Julianne ran for Tax Collector in Yeadon Borough. As the Tax Collector, she was able to assist residents, so she was still serving but a broader audience. Julianne James has built a legacy of excellence in diverse fields, including public service, nonprofit leadership, and gerontology. Her journey is characterized by self-starting initiative, exceptional communication, and a relentless drive to serve her community. Julianne loved to travel. She and her husband visited Europe, Alaska, multiple Caribbean islands and years of cruises. She planned many trips for groups to join them on some of these adventures. Julianne always said she was twenty-nine and holding and never stopped travelling, helping, and serving. She had energy plus that reflects her life motto, "activity was her happiness." Julianne was a Christian and served everyday as unto the Lord. She was a Deaconess, leader over hospitality including the Ushers, Leader for the Drama Ministry, and the Saints of Wisdom Ministry at Jehovah Jireh Baptist
Church. She was also a Trustee. She was always looking for opportunities to make a difference in the lives of those God blessed her with in her life and daily travels. Almost ten years ago, Julianne was appointed the Chairperson of the Deacon and Deaconess Board. Julianne James has touched countless lives through her leadership, community outreach, advocacy, and service. The song that symbolizes her life is, "If I Can Help Somebody as I Pass Along, If I Can Do My Duty as a Christian Ought, Than My Living Shall Not Be In Vain." Julianne's story is one of lifelong learning, servant leadership, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference in her community and lives that she touches. Her legacy continues to inspire future generations of leaders, servants, and advocates. Julianne leaves many to cherish her memory: Her Son, Rev. Dr. Alexander James, Jr.; Her Daughter, Rev. Dr. Jill R. James; A Granddaughter, Aleksaida (Aleksa) James; two Sisters, Pamela Sykes (James) and Kathryn Butler (Ronald); and a host of family and friends.
