IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Randolph
Covey
September 18, 1935 – May 13, 2020
Randolph Covey passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2020. He was 84 years old.
Randolph Obituary will be updated at a later date.
Randolph Covey also known as Randy was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on September 18,1935 to the late Ella and Elwood Covey. Randy was the youngest of his 3 siblings. He transitioned from this life the evening of Wednesday May 13, 2020 after suffering from a longtime illness.
He received his education in the Philadelphia school system. At a young age Randy started his boxing career as a leftie at PAL (Philadelphia Athletic League) where he became a professional middleweight boxer known as "Cobra". His career in the boxing world ended when he was diagnosed with a condition termed as "punch drunk". At that time the condition only affected his speech.
Randy married the love of his life Elease Waters and to their blissful union had 2 children, Cynthia Covey who preceded him in death and Loretta. Loretta was named after his eldest sister's child who succumbed to polio as an infant.
Randolph loved spending time with his children. He always took them to the finest restaurants. Additionally, he loved taking them to the lake where he would wash his pink and white Cadillac while they played and ran around with their german shepherd Freedaguard. Randy was known as the "money man" back in the day. A moniker tagged to him due to his hustling spirit and mentality. He was also known as a jack of all trades.
Randy enjoyed having fun with family and friends. He was always the life of a party, a real jokester, qualities that went undeterred even through his illness. He loved reconstructing his family homes and always knew how to make a dollar without a question. He enjoyed listening to his favorite musical artist Frank Sinatra and watching his favorite mob movie The Godfather.
Randy enjoyed cookouts at his daughter Loretta's house. Equally excited were his grandkids because they knew whenever he came he brought along his ice cream machine to make homemade vanilla custard. Loretta relocated to Gaithersburg, Maryland in 1998 and he would just do pop ups and stay with her and his grands for months at a time. It was during those times that Loretta noticed a change in him. As she questioned him she was able to discern that he was becoming ill. His reaction to her questions always was to say "You ask a lot of questions, what are you the CIA?" Ten years passed and Loretta relocated back to Philadelphia. Randy was staying with his sister Ruthy when his dementia started and at that point he was still in denial. In 2012 he went to live with his daughter Loretta. As his condition worsened, she became his full time caregiver.
He loved spending time with his grandson Alfred Milbourne during the weekend watching old mob movies and telling his "back in the day" stories to Al. During the last 8 years through God and his great mercy Loretta dedicated her life to taking care of her father. For her it was a labor of love which she executed perfectly. During the past few years Randolph became so humble. Anything you did for him he was so appreciative and would say "Thank You, God bless you and I really mean it." During his final days he enjoyed hearing his daughter come in the room singing and reading scriptures to him.
Preceding Randy in death was his beloved wife Elease, daughter Cynthia Covey, and his brother Leonard Covey.
Randolph leaves to cherish his memory; his daughter Loretta Covey-Milbourne, 2 sisters; Ruth Holmes and Vivian Thomas, 5 grandchildren; Lateef Johnson, Aneesha Ross, Crystal Milbourne, Keith Ross, and Alfred Milbourne Jr., and one great granddaughter Nevaeh Milbourne. Also a sister in heart and spirit Selina Colbert, a special niece Lenora Moultrie who helped care for him during his illness along with Joyce Smith and Charlotte Sigler. He also leaves to mourn a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
