Abe Styles Obituary

Ecclesiastes 3:1-3 NKJV

To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: 2 A time to be born, “01-04-959;” And a time to die; “6-13-2022.”

Abe Cohen Junior Styles was born to the late Lucy Britton-Styles and Abe Cohen, Senior on January 7, 1959, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He was the youngest of eleven children. Sadly, four siblings preceded his death: Levin Cohen, Mary Styles, Gail Styles-Jackson, and Denise Cohen.

Abe was affectionately known as “Lil Abe,” as a child. His eldest sister-second mother, BettyJoe, “BJ,” nicknamed Abe, “Hammerhead.” He was educated in the Philadelphia School District system.  Abe was a successful entrepreneur.

Abe met and married his childhood sweetheart, “Sharon Walker,” on May 7, 1995. The union produced one son, Abe Faheim Styles, Jr.

Abe Loving Parents and Legacy: Lovingly spoiled by his parents and siblings

Abe and his father, aka “Big Abe, /Blood” often made family visits to South Carolina for hunting trips, and deep-sea fishing excursions on his father’s sailboat.  To the surprise of the family, his father taught Abe taught how to drive his Buick car at the age of thirteen from South Carolina. Big Abe “Blood,” trained his son on manhood, courage, life lessons, street-smarts and cooking savory meat dishes.

Abe’s mother, Lucy was a gentle, soft-spoken woman who raised their children in a nurturing loving Christian environment. She trained their children on work ethics, finances, strong family values, leadership, cooking, and the importance of holiday gatherings, reunions, and birthdays.  His older siblings spoiled Abe throughout his lifetime. He inherited his style of impeccable and expensive dressing from his parents and siblings. Abe also grew-up with his cousins, “the descendants of his mothers’ eleven siblings, the Britton Family.” In which, they affectionately called one another “Cuz,” up until this day.

The early 1960s The Styles family were members of Second Shalom Baptist Church. In the 1980s many family members joined Triumph Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor James Hall.

Abe ‘mother “Lucy,” and eldest niece, “Stephanie,” became members of Harold O. Davis Baptist Church in the early 1990s. After the passing of his parents, Abe and his wife Sharon, accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. Together they joined the Harold O. Davis Memorial Baptist Church.  In 1999, on Easter Sunday sunrise service, Abe and his eldest niece were baptized under the pastorage of the late Bishop Kermit L. Newkirk, Jr, Senior Pastor of the Harold O. Davis Memorial Baptist Church.

After the unfortunate passing of his youngest sister “Gail, “Uncle Abe, became the protective surrogate father to his niece, KeKe and nephew Askia.

Abe was always dependable, with a gentle demeanor and welcoming smile on his face, charismatic and magnetic personality. A distinguished and impeccable dresser. Wherever he travelled, his presence commanded attention. He was a calm, charitable and composed man, who enjoyed family, cooking, travelling, laughing, and entertaining.  While growing up in North Philly and the Nicetown areas, Abe developed lifelong and budding friendships.  He often greeted people, “hey Old Boy or Old Girl.”

Abe leaves to cherish his devoted & loving wife, Sharon Styles; six siblings: BettyJoe Gary, Phyllisa Styles, Lillie Ellerbe of Middletown, Delaware; Frank, (Eve) Styles, Deacon James, (Edith) Styles, Sr. of Atlanta, Georgia; and Essie McFalling, of Detroit, Michigan; three sister-in-laws: Debra Walker, Carisse, (Garfield) Fleming and Lisa Walker.
